The Powerful Alternative of Dabbing

What is Dabbing?

Dabbing is the practice of consuming concentrated extracts of cannabis. “Dabs” or cannabis concentrates are made by extracting the cannabinoids with a solvent like isopropyl alcohol, carbon dioxide or butane. Liquid cannabis oil is made with alcohol and is most commonly sold in pre-filled cartridges. Butane hash oil (BHO) refers to the larger category of semi-solid and solid concentrates, commonly referred to as wax, budder, shatter, crumble and rosin.

What Are the Benefits of Dabbing?

This modern technique has become increasingly popular in the past decade. Dabbing is widely used because of the immediate onset and potency of the product, making it an ideal method for people who want serious relief. Patients who struggle with severe pain and nausea report success with dabbing. It is one of the cleaner delivery methods because you don’t consume any plant matter; it’s easier on the lungs. Some cannabis purists who prefer to smoke flower will enhance their joints by rolling up flower topped with wax concentrate for a stronger effect.

How Do You Dab?

When dabbing, you inhale the active chemical component of cannabis in a concentrated form. Dabs often have upwards of 50% THC content, comparable to the 15-25% THC content in flower. If you’re new to dabbing, start with very small amounts. Remember, a little goes a long way. For a lot of users, dabs are a one-hit quit situation.

Dab Rig - A dab rig is similar to a bong - it consists of a chamber, downstem and a nail. Using a metal dab tool (or wand), take a tiny amount of concentrate. Heat up the nail (made of either glass, ceramic, titanium or quartz) with a small, handheld blow torch until it glows orange. Place the dab on the nail and inhale the vapor through the chamber. If you’re starting out, check out a more detailed tutorial. Dab rigs are no joke - this heavy-hitting method is best for experienced users who have a higher tolerance. A single hit can be comparable to smoking a full joint for a some users.

Electric Nail - If you’re not into the idea of wielding a blow torch, consider using an electric nail. This process is basically the same as using a dab rig without the intimidating aspect. The electric nail is plugged in, giving you complete control over the temperature. Temperature control is crucial when it comes to optimizing the terpene profile. Terpenes are a cornerstone of medicating with cannabis, so don’t only focus on the THC and cannabinoid content.

Dab Pen - Dab pens are arguably the easiest method. They are safe to use, portable and discreet. Using a wand, apply the concentrate directly on top of the coil. Screw the top of the pen back on, hit the button and slowly inhale. Some pens have a silicone chamber at the base of the pen, allowing you to easily carry your wax with you. This method may be the easiest, but some people prefer a dab rig because of the cleaner, smoother hit.
